  • Chartwell Wedgewood workers demand fair wages, better working conditions and better benefits!

OPSEU/SEFPO members at Chartwell Wedgewood are standing together to fight for fair wages, better working conditions and better benefits!

Chartwell Retirement Homes is a multi-million-dollar company that reports millions in profits each year. Despite this, they are offering pay increases as little as 23 cents to the lowest paid workers, putting them just pennies above minimum wage. This is not right.

Join us in calling on Chartwell CEO Vlad Volodarski and COO Karen Sullivan to come to the table with a fair deal that reflects the valuable work of OPSEU/SEFPO members at Chartwell Wedgewood!

Add your name here, and we’ll send the Volodarski and Sullivan the message below on your behalf.

Email Subject: Chartwell – Bargain a Fair Deal with Wedgewood Workers!

To: Vlad Volodarski – CEO: vvolodarski@chartwell.com, Karen Sullivan – COO: ksullivan@chartwell.com

Here’s the text of the email that will be sent on your behalf:

I am deeply concerned that Chartwell Retirement Homes, despite profiting millions of dollars each year, is offering wage increases of as little as 23 cents to the lowest paid workers this round of bargaining. This would put many workers only pennies above minimum wage. This is not acceptable for a company as profitable as Chartwell. The workers at Wedgewood deserve a meaningful wage increase and improved benefit coverage to reflect the important work they do to keep your facilities running with care and compassion.

These workers kept your facilities running during a global pandemic that saw long term care and retirement homes suffer under the weight of a failing healthcare system and deadly virus. These are the workers that got you through those tough times and are still dealing with the aftermath, they deserve better than the 1.5% wage increase you are offering. It is time for Chartwell to take care of the workers with the same dedication and care that they have displayed at your facilities.

By negotiating a fair deal with proper compensation, Chartwell will improve the ability to recruit and retain skilled workers who are dedicated to providing the best care possible to residents at your Wedgewood facility.

Workers are ready to come to the table to negotiate a fair deal. As the CEO and COO of Chartwell, I urge you to act immediately to ensure that Chartwell comes to the table with a deal that reflects the value of the workers at your Wedgewood facility.

    Sincerely,

    [Your Name]

    Bonnie Eddy – L330

My name is Bonnie Eddy, and I am a proud Indigenous woman from Wiikwemikoong.

I have over 25 years of experience as a Child and Youth Worker, and have always prioritized the well-being of those I support. My journey in activism began a decade ago at the local level, where I have had the privilege of holding various leadership roles, including Chief Steward, Vice President, member of the negotiating and pay equity teams, and Equity/Diversity Lead.

I also proudly represented Region 3 on the Provincial Women’s Committee. In this role, I worked alongside Equity members and staff to plan and moderate three regional educationals and three provincial conferences focusing on equity issues. After taking a term away, I am honored to have been re-elected.

As an Indigenous woman living with a disability, I have faced unique challenges that intersect with both my cultural identity and lived experience. This perspective has shaped my approach to advocacy, leadership, and support—ensuring that I navigate these spaces with awareness and sensitivity.

As a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, I collaborated with Equity teams to develop a Constitutional Amendment that introduced seven Equity Executive Board seats within OPSEU/SEFPO. I have continuously stood against the systemic disregard for equity and remain committed to championing fairness, justice, and inclusivity in all aspects of my work.

I firmly believe in fostering a climate of social justice where advocating for Indigenous people is essential to building a more equitable workplace and union. OPSEU/SEFPO has the strength and potential to drive meaningful change, and I am confident that together, we can create inclusive policies and practices that truly reflect our shared values.

    Cristine Rego – L352

    Cris Rego

I am a proud member of Lac Seul First Nation. I am also a proud member of OPSEU as a fulltime faculty.  As such, during my time here at Fleming College I have developed and delivered a number of Indigenous courses.  I have also assisted in developing and delivering a number of Indigenous courses for OPSEU. I have been a member of the Indigenous Circle. Further, I have made Indigenous issues a priority in my work career, ensuring I have worked in all organizations that  have touched Indigenous peoples, ie: CAS (from front line to senior management), federal corrections (Kingston Penitentiary, one of the first Indigenous supervisors on the guard staff), provincial corrections (Don Jail), hospital crisis social worker, Center for Addiction & Mental Health (Provincial Aboriginal Training Consultant), counselling, developing and delivering curriculum with an Indigenous lens, sought after speaker and facilitator on topics such as Intergenerational Trauma, Suicide Awareness, Cultural Safety, Trauma Informed Care, MMIWG & Sex Trafficking and many more.  My passion is changing health outcomes for Indigenous peoples.

I follow my Traditions, my grandfather and grandmother and mother were Medicine people, healers.  I am a Masters Social Worker and commit to ensuring integrity in my practice.  I teach sessions on how to make ribbon skirts and ribbon shirts, for the Friendship Center here in Peterborough, for interested groups and for Indigenous Peoples Court. I have been a Traditional Hand Drummer and with the Wabishki Makwa (White Bear) hand drummers.  I am also a 60’s Scoop survivor.  I practice and teach how to have Two-eyed seeing in working with Indigenous people.  I have been honored with the Woman of Distinction Award on two different occasions from the Sudbury YWCA, one for my work with Intimate Partner Violence and one for my hand drumming.

I would be honored to represent Indigenous as a Board Member, be honored to share my wisdom, and believe that having experience being on the Board for Sudbury CAS would assist in that role.  I feel I bring traditional knowledge with that experience.

  • Ford’s campaign to silence criticism ruled unconstitutional – a win for our democratic rights, and a win for workers everywhere!

The Supreme Court of Canada, the final court of appeal in the country, has struck down provisions of an Ontario law limiting third-party election advertising spending for an entire year preceding elections as unconstitutional.

Today’s decision marks yet another entry on Ford’s shameful ledger of privileging his political agenda over working peoples’ interests – this time, at the expense of Ontarians’ Charter rights.

The Working Families Coalition and Ontario unions fought against Bill 307 since it was first introduced by the Ford government in 2021, seeing it for the campaign to silence opposition it was always intended it to be.

The right to meaningfully participate in the electoral process and an informed vote includes hearing from a diversity of perspectives and interpretations during the election writ period. This includes integral third parties, such as labour unions and civic organizations, that can speak across party lines and with unique insight to the real issues affecting everyday Ontarians.

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice had previously struck down Ford’s third-party speech restrictions on the basis that they unconstitutionally violated freedom of expression under Section 2 of the Charter. The Ford government later reintroduced the legislation as Bill 307, invoking the notwithstanding clause to circumvent Ontarians’ rights and override the bill’s unconstitutional provisions.

“Working people took Ford to court and won – again. Ford’s unconstitutional Bill 307 was always an attempt to shield his government from being held accountable for the myriad of ways they’ve failed the people of Ontario,” said JP Hornick, President of OPSEU/SEFPO. “This decision sends an important reminder that no government is above the Charter, or the law, something you’d expect a Premier facing RCMP criminal investigation to have no trouble remembering.”

“Democracy is something we have to make and remake every day, especially when it is increasingly under threat from politicians willfully abusing their power to run interference,” added Hornick. “This was a victory for our democratic rights, but it’s not the last time we’ll need to fight. When that time comes, we’ll be ready.”
